I did it

I'm livestreaming and podcasting again. I listened to some of my old solo podcasts and realise that it did start off as a decent quality (albeit poorly marketed) podcast, but at some point, I got so addicted to livestreaming that I just spent all my energy on livestreaming and even turned my podcast into a livestream and just dumped the audio there. Now that podcast is still on the shelf but I have revived my interview podcast (called Checking In On Funny People).  I'm quite happy with the first 3 episodes. I've not promoted it yet, so nobody knows it exists still, but I will this weekend. My idea from last week of mashing the two livestreams into one podcast has been put on hold because right now, the idea feels odd to me. Just from editing, I just don't see how I can be as interesting by myself as the guest is in the interview. If I was a listener, I'd just want to skip to the bit where the guest is dropping some truth bombs.

I've often wondered about the future of audio podcasts. Like with bandwidth getting cheaper, I think more and more audio content will end up having to become video content. Just like how music became videos in the 80s, podcasts are becoming videos now. But when I edit the podcast, the audio can be edited so seamlessly, you wouldn't know all the bits I cut out. On video, unless you have several camera angles, you will see a lot of jump cuts. It's still way better than not editing at all. And it's still very acceptable now for Youtube content, but content creation is becoming more and more saturated and competitive and everyone is trying to up their production value. It's only a matter of time before jump cuts become a thing of the past and audio podcasts loses its edge over video podcasts. At some point, I will be getting more cameras, audio equipment and studio lighting to set up face-to-face interviews. But first, let's see how the audio podcast / online interview livestreams go first.

At the beginning of the pandemic in March 2020, I feel like there was a lot of interest in livestreams/podcasts because everyone was stuck at home. As time went by, a lot of people stopped watching/listening and went back to work. But right now, I feel like at least locally, there is sort of a shortage of content creators again. Steven Bones is mostly focused on gaming content right now. Mike Saddi, Nuha, Brian, Prakash are all focused on stand up comedy. Kavin and Keren have their podcast which puts out an episode once in a few months. Zak and his friends did 5 episodes and stopped after that. I think Jinnyboy and Yum Cha sessions are about the only ones I know doing it now and their circle is pretty different from mine.

So I feel like there's a chance this could work.
